How to Crochet a Bee (Head, Body, Wings,
and Assembly Instructions)

Materials Needed
For this Baby Bee Crochet Pattern, you will need worsted-weight acrylic yarn in yellow, white, and black. We recommend using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, but you’re free to use any other yarn of similar weight and fiber content. In addition, you should have an F-5 crochet hook (or any hook size necessary to obtain the gauge of 16 stitches / 20 rounds per 4 inches), some stitch markers, a yarn needle, poly stuffing, safety eyes, and a small amount of thread.
How to Crochet a Bee: Instructions
Step 1: The Head
This pattern is worked in continuous rounds (i.e. spirals), so we’ll start with chain 2 in yellow (or another main color of your choice).
Round 1: 6sc in 2nd ch from hook
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc around
Round 3: [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times
Round 4: [sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc] 6 times
Round 5: [sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next c] 6 times
Rounds 6-12: sc in each sc around
Round 13: dec 15 times
Round 14: [sc in next 3 sc, dec] 3 times
Step 2: The Body
The head and the body of the bee are worked in one piece, so we will just continue going in rounds where we left off.
Round 15: inc 12 times
Round 16-17: sc in each sc around
Cut off the excess yarn. Now would be a good time to put some stuffing in the head.
Round 18-21: Using black yarn: sc in each sc around. Cut off excess yarn.
Round 22-24: Using yellow yarn: sc in each sc around.
Round 25: dec 12 times
Round 26: dec 6 times – 6 sc.
Fasten off the yarn and finish stuffing the bee. Weave the yarn tail through the last 6 sc and fasten securely.
Step 3: The Wings (Make 2)
Unlike the body of the bee, the wings are worked in rows. Using white yarn, make a chain 7.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch; hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next ch, 6 dc in last ch; on the opposite side of ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in last ch; turn.
Row 2: ch 1, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, 2 dc in each of next 6 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts, turn.
Row 3: ch 1, slip st in each st around. Fasten off.
Repeat for the other wing.
How to Assemble the Bee
Step 1: Attach the Wings
Attach the wings by sewing them to the bee’s back. Optionally, to make sure they’re positioned correctly, first secure them with some pins.
Step 2: Face Details
The bee’s face doesn’t have to be too complicated. Two safety eyes and a thread for the mouth should suffice. However, if this bee is supposed to be a gift for a toddler or a baby, consider replacing the safety eyes with some thread, too.
Step 3: Antennae
If you’re feeling up to it, you can also make some antennae for your bee. Using black yarn, make a chain 10, and then do a slip stitch in the second chain from the hook and each chain across. Sew the antennae onto the bee’s head.
Step 4: Legs
Your bee can also have legs (in this pattern, we’ll make six legs). Using black yarn, start off with a chain 7, do a sc in the second chain from the hook, and then a slip stitch in the last five chains. Sew the legs onto the bee’s body.
