How to Make Yarn Tassels: A Step-by-Step Guide

Crafters are always looking for ways to add personality to their projects, whether that means using their favorite colors or adding sequins and other decorative embellishments to make their creations stand out.

A crafter-approved favorite when it comes to personalizing a knit or crochet piece is adding tassels. They’re easy, quick, and fun — not to mention they do a really great job adding life to a piece and giving it character.

In this comprehensive guide, we let you in on how to make yarn tassels, along with tips on how to customize and incorporate them into your projects.

Gathering Supplies and Choosing Yarn

Making a yarn tassel requires only four materials: yarn, cardboard, scissors, and a brush. As the yarn is the foundation of this project, what type you select will influence how your tassels look.

Thick yarn will create fluffy tassels, while thin yarn will make smaller and slimmer strands. If you want your tassels to look more textured and unique, you can also mix different yarn types and colors.

Our process involves the use of cardboard so you can easily wind your yarn and build your tassel. The cardboard should be hard and sturdy so you can wrap your tassel around it without worrying about it bending.

If you want to create smaller tassels for jewelry, you can opt not to have cardboard and use cotton embroidery floss instead. One piece creates one tassel.

Preparing the Yarn

Before you begin, you need to have the right measurements for your cardboard.

Cut your cardboard according to how long you want your tassels to be. As a general rule, the cardboard should be about ½ inch (12 mm) longer than your desired tassel length. As for the width, cut the cardboard 2 inches (5 cm) wide. This will give you enough space on the cardboard to trim the ends of your tassel.

If you’re using embroidery floss, simply cut off two pieces of thread, each 10 inches (25 cm) long. Keep the papers at the ends of the floss to make it easier to work with. Take one of the pieces you cut off and wind it around the center of the thread. Secure it with a knot.

Creating the Tassel

To create the tassel with your piece of cardboard, wrap the yarn around the cardboard cutout vertically. Continue doing so until your reach your desired thickness for your tassel. When you’re finished, cut the yarn.

For smaller tassels, fold the embroidery floss in half — right where you tied the piece of thread. At this point, you can choose to create a loop. Wind your second piece of thread ¾ in (2 cm) from the top and secure it with a double knot. If you don’t need a loop, fold the tassel with the ties inside.

Securing and Finishing the Tassel
If you’re working with a piece of cardboard to create your tassel, cut off a small piece of yarn from the ball and pull it through underneath your tassel. Tie both ends tightly into a knot to secure it. Once tied, cut the bottom threads to remove them from the cardboard.

Then, take another piece of yarn from the ball and wrap it around the tassel an inch from your first knot. Tie it to secure. Hold the tassel up from the first knot and trim the strands to clean them up. Use your brush to fluff the ends, and if needed, do another trim.

It’s the same process if you’re working with an embroidery floss. Remove the papers holding the threads in place, trim the ends of the thread to get rid of the loops, and clean up your tassel.

Customizing and Decorating the Tassel
Like any yarn project, you can make your tassel your own by adding beads around the head. To do this, thread beads on a piece of yarn in a row and secure the end with a knot. Wrap that thread a few times around the head of your tassel and secure the ends.

You can also wrap tread around the center of your tassel to add a nice contrast or attach a smaller tassel or pom pom to the handle.

If you want to take your customization a step further, you can use leather instead of yarn to create your tassels. This will create a sleek embellishment you can add to bags and purses. Feel free to get creative!

Incorporating Tassels into Projects
Adding tassels is a great way to personalize your project and give them a unique touch. Attach them to the ends of your blanket or the corners of your throw pillows, hang them on your crochet bags, sew them to the bottom of your crochet sweaters, or create your own statement jewelry.

The possibilities are truly endless — let your creativity shine and embellish your knit or crochet projects with bright and bold tassels that reflect your personal style.

Care and Maintenance of Yarn Tassels
Like any crochet project, your yarn tassels need proper care and maintenance so they keep their beautiful appearance for years to come. Here are some tips:

Cleaning: Regularly remove dirt and debris on your tassels with a soft-bristled brush or lint roller.

Washing: When washing a piece of fabric with yarn tassels, opt to hand wash instead of tossing it in the washing machine.

Fill a basin with lukewarm water and a small amount of gentle detergent. Submerge the fabric, along with the tassels, and agitate lightly. Do not scrub or wring the tassels to prevent breaking the threads. Squeeze out excess water and lay the fabric flat on a clean towel to air dry.

Storing: Store fabrics with yarn tassels in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated area. Do not store them in direct sunlight or in places with high humidity. You want to keep your tasseled projects away from other items so the threads don’t get caught or snagged.

If you want to store multiple tassels, wrap them in zip lock bags individually so they don’t tangle.

Conclusion
Yarn tassels are a fun and easy way to add personality to your knit or crochet projects. With only four materials and a couple of minutes of your time, you can get started creating yarn tassels to embellish your clothes or household items. So go ahead and unleash your creativity!
