How to Make Yarn Tassels: A Step-by-Step Guide
Gathering Supplies and Choosing Yarn
Making a yarn tassel requires only four materials: yarn, cardboard, scissors, and a brush. As the yarn is the foundation of this project, what type you select will influence how your tassels look.
Thick yarn will create fluffy tassels, while thin yarn will make smaller and slimmer strands. If you want your tassels to look more textured and unique, you can also mix different yarn types and colors.
Our process involves the use of cardboard so you can easily wind your yarn and build your tassel. The cardboard should be hard and sturdy so you can wrap your tassel around it without worrying about it bending.
If you want to create smaller tassels for jewelry, you can opt not to have cardboard and use cotton embroidery floss instead. One piece creates one tassel.
Preparing the Yarn
Before you begin, you need to have the right measurements for your cardboard.
Cut your cardboard according to how long you want your tassels to be. As a general rule, the cardboard should be about ½ inch (12 mm) longer than your desired tassel length. As for the width, cut the cardboard 2 inches (5 cm) wide. This will give you enough space on the cardboard to trim the ends of your tassel.
If you’re using embroidery floss, simply cut off two pieces of thread, each 10 inches (25 cm) long. Keep the papers at the ends of the floss to make it easier to work with. Take one of the pieces you cut off and wind it around the center of the thread. Secure it with a knot.
To create the tassel with your piece of cardboard, wrap the yarn around the cardboard cutout vertically. Continue doing so until your reach your desired thickness for your tassel. When you’re finished, cut the yarn.
For smaller tassels, fold the embroidery floss in half — right where you tied the piece of thread. At this point, you can choose to create a loop. Wind your second piece of thread ¾ in (2 cm) from the top and secure it with a double knot. If you don’t need a loop, fold the tassel with the ties inside.
